Longest Married Couple in the World

Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher have an extraordinary story to tell. They’ve been married for 86 years. Together, they endured the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam, they…

Today I swear I’m not doing anything…I just wanna lay in my bed. Don’t feel like picking up my phone, so leave a message at the tone…

Bruno Mars, The Lazy Song

I had a completely lazy weekend. And I totally loved it! Dinner with a new friend, workout, and lots of old Prison Break DVDs. LOL. It was totally random, lazy…and awesome! :)

This is something to make you re-think your perception of “beauty.”

Very useful words of advice for all of us who have voluntarily entered the “Climb to the Top of the Corporate Ladder Before Your 40” Olympic race. :) Speaking for no reason is one of my biggest pet peeves….especially in professional situations. Thanks to MoneyIsNotImportant for discussing this topic.

Anyone who works in the corporate world has attended a meeting where your boss’s boss’s boss’s boss is making an appearance at your office.  The management team is in a frenzy, trying to ensure that everything is perfect.
Everyone is gathered in a large conference room, and the big wig gives his speech about synergy, global diversification, blah blah blah.  Inevitably, someone that is trying to make an impression will ask a question just for the sake of asking something.  Although he thinks this will help his career, it could be the worst thing he could do.
When a hot shot from corporate opens the floor for questions, live by this rule: If you don’t have a profound question that applies to the speaker’s job level, you’re better off keeping your mouth shut.
If you ask a question about getting different coffee flavors, how to do something in Outlook, or when the printer will be fixed, you are going to look like an idiot.  The big shot will forget, but your immediate manager will not.  The next time a promotion is on the line, he/she will remember this moment.  You have planted a seed in their mind that makes them think you do not know how to act appropriately in front of VIPs.  That, my friends, is the worst thing you can do for your career.

Wow. So, again just stumbling through Tumblr, I found a very powerful documentary about the issue of “shadeism” and beauty in communities around the world. As an African-American female, this issue is a popular topic of conversation among my friends…trying to find our way through society as “brown-skinned girls.” These types of issues regarding multiculturalism, particularly with respect to the media industry, is what drives so many of my hopes and dreams for my career. This is why I wanted to work with/in the media…to expand the representations of different cultures. To give people a more accurate representation of themselves when they read magazines, surf the internet and watch television.

Although there is much to be done about this issue, I think we can take slight comfort in knowing that women all over are trying to combat this issue, and help make our society better place for future generations. I think this short film is a must-see for all women. Enjoy.

This documentary short looks specifically at how ‘shadism’ affects young womyn within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian diasporas. Through the eyes and words of 5 young womyn and 1 little girl - all females of colour - the film takes us into the thoughts and experiences of each. Overall, ‘Shadeism’ explores where shadeism comes from, how it directly affects us as womyn of colour, and ultimately, begins to explore how we can move forward through dialogue and discussion.

I can totally relate. Ha!

La via est belle. Life is beautiful.
Lately, I’ve been feeling really centered and clear-minded. Over the course of the past six months, I’ve learned the importance of being in the middle of the road, the importance of balance, the need to be centered. I’m not sure what to attribute this serene calm to…maybe I’m “coming into my own” (as my elders like to say), or maybe the knicks and cuts I have from life have added another level of complexity to my thought-process, helping me to see things more clearly and better handle the situations ahead of me.
My job and career are in a great place. Friends and family are great. I feel myself on a promising path, with a bright future ahead of me. And it’s funny when I think about it because life seems so much bigger than it use to. The world is so much larger, things are more complicated, I have more responsiblity…but oddly enough I feel like I’m in control and on the right track. It’s this odd place of serenity…even though I have so much to accomplish in life, I look forward to the challenges, the lessons and rewards that will come with them.
Well…who am I kidding? It’s clear to me that God has been in control. It’s so funny how HE has always found a way to put me right where I need to be. Now that I think about it, I suppose this peace I’m experiencing is from the growth of my faith in God and his plan for my life. Whatever God has for me is already done. And it’s nice knowing that I’m taken care of.
Wherever this “calm” is coming from, I don’t totally know, but it feel so amazing to be able to appreciate the beauty in the phrase “La via est belle.” I can say so many thing about life, good or bad. But to keep it simple, to the point, and accurate…let’s just settle on saying that it’s beautiful. :)
